April Meeting (April 18, 2018)

April Meeting (April 18, 2018)

Please join us as our April Pupilage group will explore some of the most interesting defendants in all of copyright law--cosplayers!  Come learn about the exciting topic of copyrights covering clothing and costume designs in "Copyright Wars:  Attack of the Cosplayers."

A word from our co-chairs:

Have you ever watched the Dragon Con parade march down Peachtree Street and wondered whether any of those folks get sued for making and wearing such awesome—but unlicensed—costumes?  Well, as you’ve probably already guessed, they certainly do!  And if you’re curious about these kinds of cases, we hope you will join us for our presentation, which will follow the adventures of two unlikely Star Wars cosplay heroes, who team up with some unexpected friends to combat the overwhelming might of the Disney IP Empire.  Will our heroes preserve their right to wear unlicensed, custom-made Star Wars costumes?  Or are they doomed to defeat by the legendary Star Wars Copyrights?  And how many times can we bag on the new Star Wars film without totally abandoning the narrative arc?  Come find out!

March Meeting (March 21, 2018)

Join us on Wednesday, March 21, at Taylor English for a fun event covering the completely straightforward and entirely predictable concept of Fair Use in Copyright!  Have you ever posted to Instagram and thought, “That pic is amazing! I could make a lot of money selling that one!”? Well, world-famous appropriation artist Richard Prince does just that—and he just might be committing copyright infringement in the process. Come join us Wednesday as we explore the interplay between the world of appropriation artwork and fair use as a defense to copyright infringement.

April Meeting (April 19, 2017)

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 - 5:30pm to 8:00pm - Northern District of Georgia

Please join us as our April Pupilage group teaches us about domain name disputes!  Trademark law and domain names have clashed for more than 20 years.  Although the legal issues are now well-developed, the cybersquatting problem is far from resolved.  Indeed, last year saw a record number of domain name disputes filed with WIPO, the leading provider of services under the popular Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).  Still, many trademark owners (and even IP practitioners) are unaware of how to avoid and resolve these issues, even as new top-level domain names and dispute policies have been created.

In fashion, one day you’re in.  And the next day, you’re out.

And so it is with clothing and copyright protection.  You are invited to come and see our designers try to meet the latest fashion challenge -- to design a functional garment that is artistically originally but with design elements conceptually separable from the garment’s function so as to be protectable by copyright – and to hear about the rare copyright case accepted by the Supreme Court on appeal from the Sixth Circuit, see Varsity Brands vs. Star Athletica

We hope to see you on the runway.

PARKING: For parking, the primary parking lot we have used in the past for this event will be at least partially unavailable as it is now being used for the filming some scenes for a movie. The Parking Company of America should allow entry while spaces are available. When that lot is full, you will be directed to the immediately adjacent lot.

One can enter the immediately adjacent lot either of two ways:

(1. Proceed as though entering the lot, but Instead of pulling up to the ticket booth, take the lane to the right that circles the lot. At the rear of the lot you will take a right over some railroad tracks into the adjoining public lot. Normally one would purchase a ticket from the machine in the lot and place it on the dashboard. In recognition of our event, however, Parking Company of America will not be ticketing that lot, so for those parking in this lot, do not buy a ticket to place in your dashboard.

(2. Proceed as though parking in the "gulch" as in past events, but instead of going to the ticket gate continue on the road bearing to the left in front of the lot. At the end of the parking lot, bear right and proceed straight ahead for a block. Park in the lot you enter immediately after crossing over the railroad tracks. Again, do not buy a ticket to place in your dashboard as you will not be ticketed. (This route essentially follows underneath the elevated highway on the side of the Sam Nunn and Richard B. Russell Buildings.
