October Meeting (October 19, 2016)

Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - 5:30pm to 8:00pm - Alston & Bird

In fashion, one day you’re in.  And the next day, you’re out.

And so it is with clothing and copyright protection.  You are invited to come and see our designers try to meet the latest fashion challenge -- to design a functional garment that is artistically originally but with design elements conceptually separable from the garment’s function so as to be protectable by copyright – and to hear about the rare copyright case accepted by the Supreme Court on appeal from the Sixth Circuit, see Varsity Brands vs. Star Athletica

We hope to see you on the runway.

Program Co-Chairs: Katherine Wallace and Nadya Sand

Meeting Schedule: Reception from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Program from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.

Host:

Alston & Bird
One Atlantic Center
1201 West Peachtree Street
Suite 4900
Atlanta, GA 30309-3424

Parking info:  Please park in the One Atlantic Center parking garage. After you’ve parked, take the One Atlantic Center parking garage elevator to the Concourse Level (Level C). Proceed through the underground concourse walkway. Go up the escalator, turn left to check in with the Alston & Bird receptionist located at the security desk in the lobby.

Note:  The cost of parking validation is one of the Inn’s biggest expenses. Please consider walking or carpooling if possible.

April Meeting

Program Title: “An Evening with the Founding Editors of Patentdocs.org”
Guest Speakers: Kevin Noonan and Donald Zuhn
Program Co-Chairs:      Sherry Knowles and Brent Bellows
Date:Wednesday, April 13, 2016
Meeting Schedule:       Reception:  5:30 to 7:00 PM; Program:  7:00 to 8:00 PM
Host: Northern District of Georgia,75 Spring Street, SW; Atlanta, GA 30303-3361

PARKING: For parking, the primary parking lot we have used in the past for this event will be at least partially unavailable as it is now being used for the filming some scenes for a movie. The Parking Company of America should allow entry while spaces are available. When that lot is full, you will be directed to the immediately adjacent lot.

One can enter the immediately adjacent lot either of two ways:

(1. Proceed as though entering the lot, but Instead of pulling up to the ticket booth, take the lane to the right that circles the lot. At the rear of the lot you will take a right over some railroad tracks into the adjoining public lot. Normally one would purchase a ticket from the machine in the lot and place it on the dashboard. In recognition of our event, however, Parking Company of America will not be ticketing that lot, so for those parking in this lot, do not buy a ticket to place in your dashboard.

(2. Proceed as though parking in the "gulch" as in past events, but instead of going to the ticket gate continue on the road bearing to the left in front of the lot. At the end of the parking lot, bear right and proceed straight ahead for a block. Park in the lot you enter immediately after crossing over the railroad tracks. Again, do not buy a ticket to place in your dashboard as you will not be ticketed. (This route essentially follows underneath the elevated highway on the side of the Sam Nunn and Richard B. Russell Buildings.

IP Inn of Court Pro Bono Award

Atlanta IP Inn of Court Members:

As I mentioned at the meeting last night, we are now accepting nominations for the Pro Bono Award for the 2015/2016 Inn year. This will be the fifth year that the Inn has given the award. The award is given to a member of the Atlanta IP community that has excelled in some type of pro bono activity last year. I have formed a committee, comprising myself, Sabina Vayner and Judy Jarecki-Black, to consider all of the submissions. We will present the award to the winner at the Inn dinner in May so we need all nominations in before April 1st. Here are a few items about the award and making nominations:

  1. The award winner should be a practicing IP attorney in the Atlanta area but doesn't necessarily need to be a member of the Inn.

  2. You can make a nomination by sending me or any member of the Inn executive committee an e-mail outlining the work done by the individual that you believe makes that person worthy of the award. It doesn't have to be anything "formal"-a couple of paragraphs in an e-mail will suffice to get the process rolling.

  3. For those of you that have submitted non-winning nominations in the past, please consider submitting the person again if that person has continued to excel in the pro bono area during the past year.

  4. The pro bono work doesn't necessarily have to be in the IP area.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks in advance for your help in creating a great slate of nominations.

Best Regards, Frank
